Buzz, buzz, buzz….the phone vibrates on Corey’s dresser. “Hello?” Corey answers. “Bring yo ass outside!!! I’ve been waiting for at least 10 minutes”, Bryon yells. “Aight bro,” says Corey as he hangs up his cell phone and runs downstairs. Corey reaches for his keys on the hook along the wall on his way outside. “This mutha fucka really in a hurry to catch this L on the court,” Corey thinks out loud as he leaves his apartment. As Corey gets to the curb in front of his apartment building, he sees Byron sitting in a U-Haul with a huge grin on his face. “Aye man, what’s this?” Corey says confused. Byron can’t help but smirk and say, “Look if I asked you to help me move I knew you would come up with a reason to say no. Soooooo I lied and told you to get ready to hoop so you’d have the perfect outfit to move in.”. Byron just continues to laugh and insists, “Bro just get in the car and lets go. You’re already out here. Let’s get it done, it’s not that much stuff. Plus I got lunch.”. Corey drops his head down and slowly walks to the passenger seat of the U-Haul. Byron begins to drive and there’s silence in the cab of the U-Haul as they travel to the storage place. Byron keeps looking over at Corey trying not to bust out in complete laughter seeing how upset Corey was about the situation. “Maaaannn it’s hot as fuck in this shit. Bruh it’s damn near 100 degrees already and yo ass wanna move. Like what the fuck!?” Corey says already irritated. “Man I gotta get out of this storage unit today, plus this is the 1st day of my lease so you know, it works out perfectly,” Byron says. All Corey can do is shake his head without making any eye contact with Byron. They finally make it to the storage unit after about twenty minutes of driving, and both of them are already drenched in sweat because the AC didn’t work in the van. Even riding with the windows down provided little assistance because of the high temperature and humidity outside. “Welp my draws already sticking to my legs, now all I need is wet socks to complete this shitty situation,” Corey says. Byron chuckles, “Bro u ain’t the only one, let’s get the done quick”. Byron has his storage unit outside which didn’t help their situation any. He unlocks the door and rolls it up. The storage unit had two small sofas, a queen-sized bed, and about thirty-seven boxes with the various rooms written on them. “One question G…” Corey asked. “Soooo we’re leaving that weight set right here right?”. Byron replies, “hell naw, I paid a lot for that shit. It’s time to put those muscles to work fam.” “Dawg!! You have like eight forty-fives in there!!!” Corey yells. Byron confidently tells Corey, “Look we’ll move those first so we’ll be fresh, and then when we get to the apartment we’ll take those upstairs 1st and then we can take a break”. “UPSTAIRS!?!?!?” Corey yells. Byron can’t help but laugh sadistically and say, “Yeah man, I thought I told you”. Corey responds, “YOU TOLD ME? YOU TOLD ME? YOU TOLD…” Corey stops and takes a deep breath because he already knows Byron does these things just to get under his skin. Corey knows that even though he and Byron are not blood brothers, that blood couldn’t make them any less than family. Corey knew that he and Byron had so many similarities that it was easy for either one of them to get on the other’s nerves. Corey knew that even though the situation Byron put him in was stressful, and if it was the other way around Byron would be there angry, frustrated, and ready to work. Corey had no choice but to get the job done because he knew the loyalty each of them had to one another. Brothers in any situation. As Corey and Byron begin to pack the U-Haul with the various household items from the storage locker, Byron gets a call. “I gotta take this bro, this lil hoe imma bless the crib with tonight.” Byron tells Corey. “Aight man, just hurry the fuck up. And I’m not touching those hoe ass weights!!” Corey replies. Byron shrugs and sits in the U-Haul cab to talk on the phone. As Corey continues to move all the boxes the dinner table and all the chairs into the U-Haul, about 20 minutes goes by and Byron is still in front of the U-Haul. Corey is drenched in sweat, possibly suffering from heat exhaustion, and all that is left in the storage unit is the bed frame, the mattress, the bench press, and all of its weights. “This mutha fucka better have died cuz I know he’s been in there for a minute and there’s no AC. Plus I moved all this shit by my mutha fuckin self.” Corey says to himself out loud. Corey walks up to the driver’s side window of the cab and sees Byron on the phone still. Byron looks over at Corey and smiles and gives him the “what’s up” head nod. Corey moves his hand in a circular motion as a sign to tell Byron to roll down the window. “Aye man what the fuck are you doing?” Corey asks. “And before you answer, I need you to answer this question first. And I want you to be careful with your answer after I ask it.” Corey says. “Well…” Byron says before Corey interrupts. “NO!! Be very careful…how come you’re not all sweaty and shit? Because I know on the way over here you told me the AC doesn’t work. AND! From the looks of it and the fact that I can feel the cold air hitting me in the face from this dumb ass window, the AC seems to be working.” Byron just has the biggest smile flash across his face and replies, “Umm, I just assumed it didn’t work, but when I got the call, I tried it and it worked to perfection. So don’t judge me, I didn’t know. Plus you wouldn’t want me to be in here suffocating from this heat while I’m tryna get some cutty would you?” “I QUIT!!! Fuck you and those hoe ass weights! I’m getting me some air conditioning and you go move that other dumb shit. I’m not doing anymore!” Corey yells.
Byron just looked over and smirked, and turned off the vehicle. Corey looked dumbfounded. “Let’s just get these last two things so we can go, and don’t worry I’ll pick some beers up on the way,” Byron said calmly. Corey shakes his head and drops his eyes to the ground. Corey slowly begins to walk back to the back of the U-Haul just to get the move over with. The two of them finished unloading the storage unit into the back of the U-Haul with an awkward silence.
Bro, I’m not touching that sex couch. Man, I didn’t even have that much sex on that couch. Maybe just a little bit of sex. C’mon just get the shit and let’s go
The sun seems to be at its hottest point at the moment as they drive towards Byron’s new apartment.
As they drive towards Byron’s new apartment, Byron tries to break the tension, “Say, bro, you want me to grab a couple of forties or get a six-pack?” Corey replies sarcastically, “I dunno, whatever is gonna help me with the heat exhaustion is suffered from moving someone else’s shit by myself”. Byron laughs, “bro, my bad but I had to line up that lil chick fa later tonight. But let’s get some forties and handle up this move”. “You mean the eighteen flights of stairs we have to go up. This is a damn shame I was set up, we were supposed to be hoopin’ and not doing this shit,” Corey replies. Byron continues to laugh, “Man look, I’m bout to run up in this store and get these drinks and I’ll get you a Snickers cuz you acting like a big baby right now”. Corey just scoffs and looks out the window. They pull into the parking lot of the corner store that’s closest to Byron’s apartment. Byron gets out of the U-Haul and runs inside and Corey stays in the car. As soon as Byron walks into the gas station, another car pulls up next to the U-Haul. Corey seems to space out as he stares out the window and he doesn’t seem to notice the car that pulled up beside him. He didn’t notice until the car door opened and a woman stepped out. Corey immediately snaps out of his trance and can’t stop staring at her. As she closes her door, she notices Corey and smiles and waves. Corey trying to keep it cool, gives her a half smile and a what’s up nod. As Byron walks out of the gas station, he holds the door open so the woman can walk through. She walked through the door like she didn’t even notice Byron. Byron runs back to the U-Haul with a big smile on his face and opens the door, “bro did you see ol girl? You should’ve seen the look she gave me when she walked through the door.” Corey just chuckles, “she didn’t even notice you, bro”. “Man hold on I’m bout to go back in there and get that” Byron exclaimed. “Aight gon head man, just leave the beer here with me” Corey replied. Corey grabs one of the “OEs”, opens it, and takes a big gulp. Byron hurries up and gets out to stop the woman before she leaves the store. He runs up to the door and opens it as the woman is leaving. “Excuse me, ma’am, you’ve ever met a real thug?” Byron asks. She looks at Byron with the most disgusted face and covers the side of her face with her hand so she doesn’t have to look at him anymore. Byron walks back to the U-Haul and
